Fat Buddha
Fat Buddha, found on Pilgrim Street, has an array of cuisines from Eastern Europe, from Thai to Chinese to Indian food. The dishes themselves are aromatically spiced and seasoned, allowing you to splash out a little without breaking the bank. Served alongside dishes of Honey Chilli Chicken, Deep-fried Monkfish Tail and Bitter Chocolate Truffle, you can sip a cocktail in the most exotic and oriental of atmospheres, whilst listening to contemporary tunes. All served in a timely fashion by an amicable staff who are always available to offer more drinks and opinions. Happiness Inn
Chinese food fan? Welcome.
The greatest thing is its location. A five minutes’ walk from the main school campus of Newcastle University, opposite to M&S supermarket and Haymarket bus station, Happiness Inn is the best place to enjoy some traditional Chinese dishes. Not good enough compared with your mom though, but much better than what you create in your kitchen. Dishes such as Dim sum and other Cantonese delicacies are very authentic there, so it is also a good choice if you want to treat your foreign friends, who normally don’t like spicy Chuan food.
Decoration colour is vermilion, representing good luck and smooth. During the Spring festival, you will see groups of Chinese students gather there to celebrate. And if you are an only child in a Chinese family, this place may make you feel at home. Suggestion: just ask for the 10% student discount before you ask the waiter to bring you the bill. Price: £10 to £20 per person
Address: 91A Percy Street City Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7RW

Jam Jar
Jam Jar is more than just a jar but a food and drink novel venue on the hustle and bustle Osborne road, Jesmond. I went there with a friend in a sunny Saturday and Jam Jar turns to be the best food place I have ever found in Newcastle. The venue is decorated in a home casual style with unfinished wall, feeling spacy and yet comfortable.
We ordered the infamous Jam Burger, which really deserves its fame. It is a brioche bun crammed with a succulent chuck steak with cheese, bacon, onions and tomatoes. With quite a generous portion, I could barely pick it up and bite it into my mouth! If you don’t feel like it, don’t worry though as you can find a modest range of other dishes starting at £4 for starters and £9 for main courses and £4 for desserts. For the burgers, cow v pig is also quite eye-catching, a combination of chuck steak and pork shoulder meat. The cocktail drinks serving in a jar gets a lot reputation, but I haven’t have the chance to try it yet. From the atmosphere to the food they provide, Jam Jar would be a good choice to spend a nice afternoon out with friends or family!
